Summary
This volume is a biography of French artist and Post-Impressionist painter Paul Câezanne (1839-1906). Câezanne laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Câezanne can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic inquiry, Cubism. This work, by a noted scholar of Câezanne, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and other French painters of the late 19th century, attempts to tell the story of Câezanne's life in a very factual manner, letting documents, first-person accounts, and other historic evidence speak for themselves. Much of the author's evidence comes from correspondence between Câezanne and âEmile Zola, a French writer and Câezanne's early childhood friend.
