Summary
"The only authentic contemporary records of the epic migration known as the Gold Rush are the journals which a few of the Forty-Niners kept while they were in transit. This book is principally the text of a journal begun by Vincent Geiger at St. Joseph, Missouri, and continued by Wakeman Bryarly from the North Platte until his arrival in California. In preparing the journal for publication, Mr. Potter, regarding it as more than a record of a colorful episode, has focused upon some of the neglected aspects of the great overland trek. The Gold Rush emerges as a phenomenon of genuine historical importance and not merely a glamorous incident providing dramatic relief in the record of America's past"--Jacket
