Summary
Memoirs of Langbein, born in 1912 in Vienna, describing his experiences during the World War II period. A member of the Communist Party, he left Austria after the Anschluss in 1938 to fight in Spain with the International Brigades. After their defeat in 1939, he was imprisoned after crossing the border into France and was placed in several internment camps (St. Cyprien, Gurs, Le Vernet). In May 1941 he was deported to Dachau, and from there to Auschwitz in August 1942. Langbein was active in the resistance in the camps in which he was interned, in particular in the "Kampfgruppe Auschwitz". As a typist in the surgery in Auschwitz, he wrote death reports for hundreds of people each day, mainly Jews. He witnessed torture and executions, and knew about the medical experiments and the gassings in Auschwitz. In August 1944 he was sent from Auschwitz to Neuengamme; in April 1945 he escaped during an evacuation. After the war he returned to Vienna.
