- The first essay is a translation of: Das Unbewusste im normalen und kranken Seelenleben, the 3rd rev. and enl. ed. (1926) of Die Psychologie der unbewussten Prozesse.
- The second essay was published in German in 1928 under title: Die Beziehungen zwischen dem Ich und dem Unbewussten. It is based on Jung's article La structure de l'inconscient, published in Archives de psychologie.
- "The original versions of both papers appeared some years ago, and they were published in English, under different titles, in the volume of Collected papers on analytical psychology edited by Constance Long. (Second edition... 1920). Of the first essay only the framework of its earlier form can be recognized and...much new material has been added to the second essay."-Translator's pref.
