Summary

This translation of the fully revised second German edition provides a clear exposition of the earth's climatic history over the last billion years. While primarily designed to meet the needs of students of geology and climatology, the book will also interest paleobotanists, meteorologists, oceanographers, and all the other scientists who require an assessment of the geological evidence concerning climatic variation. The first part of the book show how the nature of past climates can be deduced from a careful examination of sediments and fossils and indicates how isotope studies have supplemented older techniques for determining paleotemperatures. The second part describes the course of climatic history from the Precambrian to the present, with reconstructions becoming more complete as we approach the present. The third section provides a critical review of various climatic hypotheses that have been advanced by geologists, climatologists, geophysicists and astronomers, showing most of these ideas to be both controversial and inadequate. Professor Schwwarzbach inclines to the view that climatic changes have been caused by a combination of varying and fluctuating solar radiation. The book's valuable and comprehensive bibliography refers to material scattered widely in geological, meteorological and geophysical journals, and includes references to all important recent findings.
