- Summary
- Since its first publication in 1847, The Lost Trappers has been a fascinating riddle for historians. Its author claimed it was a true narrative of the wanderings of Ezekiel Williams and other fur trappers in the Rocky Mountains from 1807 to 1810. Experts questioned its authenticity; many now believe that most of the adventures really happened, although final proof remains elusive. Two things seem certain: this book mirrored American opinion of the frontier at that time, and it influenced the Western movement. This is the first all-new, edited edition of The Lost Trappers since its initial publication. David J. Weber, historian of the American West, has written an introductory essay and has footnoted 136 names, dates, and events. Two related documents have been appended, including a long letter from Ezekiel Williams written in 1816. These provide fresh evidence of a factual basis for parts of the narrative. This new and authoritative edition will arouse discussion and challenge researchers. Most readers will read it simply for enjoyment as a tale; students will find insights into many actual details of the fur trade.
