Summary
Describes the role of Papon in the "Aryanization" of the Bordeaux region and in the deportation of 1,690 Jews between 1942-44 when he was secretary-general of the prefecture in the region. Emphasizes the significance of Papon's trial in 1997, not only because he was the only important figure from the Vichy government still alive but also because of his postwar administrative and political career. Discusses the judicial procedures against Papon from the beginning of the accusation in 1981 up to 1997, his defense, and the political background of the trial. Most of the lawyers who defended Papon were close to the Front National. Explains Papon's manipulations, e.g. when he tried to present himself as responsible for saving the lives of 129 persons. The Gestapo documents found by Michel Slitinsky in 1945 in the forest near Bordeaux included papers signed by Papon. Documents relating to the war period and to the trial are appended on pp. 125-148.
