- Summary
- "This is the first modernized edition of the poems of Lady Mary Wroth, the most important English woman writer of the early seventeenth century and the first Englishwoman to publish her own Petrarchan love poetry and prose fiction." "Born circa 1587 and married in 1604, Lady Mary was part of the Queen's entourage at the court of King James I. She was widowed in 1614 and thereafter fought hard to overcome mounting debts and the disfavour of society as a result of her adulterous relationship with her first cousin, William Herbert, the Earl of Pembroke. The publication of Urania, a chivalric romance in prose, in 1621 did nothing to ease her problems. She had offended conventional expectations of women by writing - and publishing - non-religious material. Furthermore, the characters and episodes contained within Urania were clearly based on real events and people, causing considerable scandal and forcing her to leave court and go into semi-retirement." "It is the poems from Urania which are reproduced and annotated here, together with a sonnet sequence of 103 lyrics, entitled Pamphilia to Amphilanthus. Ron Pritchard's introduction provides the salient details of Lady Mary's life as well as the context for the style and content of her poetry. Spelling and orthography have been modernized in the interests of a contemporary student readership, and there is a useful bibliography."--BOOK JACKET.
