Summary
"In the late 1980s, commentators generally agreed that West German universities were in a state of crisis. Now that universities in East Gemany have been restructured largely in the image of the West German system, the question is whether true reform of the whole German university can and will finally begin. Answering this question will make an important statement about the vitality of cultural institutions in the new Germany. This volume examines the historical background and future prospects of German universities. The contributors include historians of German universities as well as current university leaders and higher-education policy-makers from Germany and the United States."--BOOK JACKET.
