- Summary
- Detailed analysis of Murngin kinship structures based on fieldwork primarily at Elcho Island and also at Milingimbi, Yirrkala and associated bush camps; confronts descent theory and alliance theory with northeast Arnhem Land data and suggests that Murngin materials better ordered by appealing to a notion of endogamous kindreds than to one of exogamous descent groups and their inter-connections; Murngin kinship has more in common with other Aboriginal social orders than with Kachin and other asymmetric alliance systems of southeast Asia.
