Summary
The First Crusade seen through the eyes of a young French nobleman. In 1096 the Duke of Lunel is one of 30,000 knights and peasants to answer Pope Urban II's call for the liberation of Jerusalem from the Muslims. On arrival in the Holy Land he falls in love with a Turkish poetess who becomes pregnant with his child. The novel describes the gory fighting and traces Lunel's disillusion as he discovers the reality behind the rhetoric. A first novel.
