Summary
This is a review of experimental results on photoionization of atoms and some molecules. There are some quantitative data on all the alkalis, magnesium, calcium and thallium and all rare gases except xenon. Results are given for the common gases: hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, CO, CO₂, NO, NO₂, H₂O and CH₄. Autoionization, excitation to a state above the ionization threshold followed by transition to the ionized state, can be an important factor. Often the broad autoionization lines mask the true continuum. There are some mass spectrometric measurements of photoionization products for most of these molecules.
