Summary

Abstract: A major focus of geriatric research is the role of nutritional factors in the aging process. Scientific evidence that may enable health care practitioners to plan nutrition programs that partially control the detrimental effects of aging is presented in this research-based volume, that is one of a series on aging. Age-related factors that influence energy intake and expenditure are discussed. The role of B vitamins, ascorbic acid, and trace minerals in the aging process are presented. Recent findings in the area of nutritional factors and brain aging are assessed. Guidelines are given for dietary treatment of Alzheimer-type senile dementia. A cross-cultural survey examines nutritional factors that may be important in longevity. The volume is intended as a resource for gerontologists, nutritionists, and other health professionals.
