- Summary
- "This book is based on papers orginally presented at the 1976 Convention of the N.Z. Institute of Public Administration at Christchurch. The problem of law and order ... will probably always be with us The nature of the book and its subject may be judged from the fact that contributors include in turn a psychologist, a sociologist, a political scientist, a lawyer, a magistrate, a policeman and a Minister of the Crown, each of them in their own way involved in the question of violent behaviour and the administrative response. The book is as important for the questions which it raises as for those it attempts to answer: whether society is concerned about prevention or only about punishment ; whether it is more concerned for the symptoms than for the disease (if there be one) ; the role (if any) played by violent entertainment, whether on the screen or on the sports field ; whether latent violence can be channelled into more productive areas ; whether violence can be eliminated altogether ; whether some forms are more acceptable than others, and if so why. The answers to these endless, but important, questions are suggested in these papers."--Inside front cover.
