Summary
  • Extending the analysis of Weimar stabilization beyond economic factors, From Recovery to Catastrophe examines the impact of programs and politics during recovery. Drawing on local material from major German cities, Lieberman traces the emergence of strong local activism and comprehensive, functional policies on the municipal level. Paradoxically he finds that these same programs contained the potential for destabilization and accelerated the fragmentation of bourgeois politics. They unleashed intense debate over the needs of the consumers, and the purpose and extent of public spending and government intervention.
  • From Recovery to Catastophe recasts common assumptions about the politics of recovery, reaction against recovery, and the increasingly uneasy relationship between state and society in the Weimar Republic.
