Summary

Surveys events in France following the publication of "J'accuse!" by Émile Zola in January 1898. This work in defense of Dreyfus provoked antisemitic disturbances throughout the country. Describes violent acts in Paris, Orléans, Clermond-Ferrand, Nancy, Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes, and many other towns; the research is based on local police archives and the press. These acts involved demonstrations in the streets, antisemitic meetings, activities of antisemitic organizations, antisemitic propaganda in local elections, and other forms of anti-Jewish propaganda adopted by Catholic, nationalist, and socialist circles. During a few months of antisemitic violence in the beginning of 1898, ca. 80 persons were arrested. States that, in general, the police were passive during these manifestations. Nobody was killed, but synagogues, Jewish schools and other institutions, and shops owned by Jews were destroyed. Shows how antisemitic slogans were used in political debates. Deals, as well, with reactions of some Jews and of Jewish institutions to the events.
