Summary
Introductory chapters describe the political and social history of the town until 1945, including Nazi measures against Jewish residents and the complex of labor camps whose Jewish inmates could be seen daily on their way to work in underground bunkers; and life under American occupation, when the town, resentfully, found itself flooded by outsiders, among them liberated concentration camp prisoners. These were concentrated in a barracks area and surrounding houses requisitioned for them; eventually this became a camp only for Jews, who developed their own self-government and cultural activities. In recent interviews, townsfolk brought up memories of plunder by the DPs; requisition of scarce living space and goods for their use; generous food allotments to DPs while Germans hungered; the camp as supposedly dirty and a hotbed of crime; Jews in the black market; and DP attacks on Germans. Comments that the townspeople, then and now, ignore what preceded and caused their own perceived wrongs: the suffering of Jews at the hands of Germans. The commemoration of the labor camps they left to others.
