Description
317 pages : illustrations, music; 21 cm.
Summary
Pp. 32-34 sketch the history of the Jews in Hungary/Slovakia: an early period of prosperity and support by the rulers was followed in the 16th-18th centuries by restrictions, social tensions, expulsions and pogroms. Ch. 4 (pp. 71-93), "Reflexion des Judentums in der slowakischen Folklore", examines folk songs and sayings about Jews, commenting that Slovakia as a multi-ethnic nation was relatively tolerant. The folklore is not markedly antisemitic, even if the Jew tends to appear in a mildly negative, sometimes comic light.
