- Summary
- This is a story of many people. It is centered in a wide area of West Texas, yet it ranges over the entire country and into Mexico. It is a simple, intimate tale. In no way is it an autobiography, although it is told in the first person to enable the author to describe vividly his impressions and observations. It covers the period in history that saw the change of transportation from the horse-drawn, with its slow tempo, to that of the jet age. All means of travel were used by the writer for he spent much of his time moving about the country. He flew many thousands of miles. The book is filled with incidents that make good stories. Many are humorous; some are tragic. All are true, though names in some instances have been changed to protect those who have no desire for fame or notoriety. Names of students are often not used. The author has a very high regard for loyalty to those he dealt with. A number of his most intimate friends have been sketched in the book. It is intended that these stories should represent the type of people who might have lived in any section of the country. They all had one thing in common: they loved their work and gave their best talents to make it successful. It is hoped that those who read this volume will be reminded of pleasant and carefree days of their youth.
