- Contains a critical edition of the "Disputation zwischen einem Juden und einem Christen" (composed between 1540-55; MS München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, cgm 972) by Lombardus, a converted German-Italian Jew, and discusses its context in the history of disputations and in the relationship between Jews, converts, and Christians in the 16th century. Lombardus's text incorporated previous ones, especially by Sebastian Münster and Paul Fagius, and apparently was translated from the Hebrew. It gives a fair hearing to the arguments of the Jew; in the end, however, the Christian condemns the Jews for their stubbornness, and their rejection and crucifixion of Christ. In 1573, Lombardus published a more aggressively anti-Jewish treatise on the customs of the Jews and "their curses on Jesus Christ and his Church and their inhuman usury". From surviving letters it appears that Christians continued to treat him as an outsider. The Church at this time strove for mass conversion of the Jews, but distrusted converts, in spite of the usefulness of their intimate knowledge of Judaism in anti-Jewish polemics.
