- Examines the reflection of antisemitism in the Hamburg press, both right-wing and left-wing, between 1884-1914, focusing on four newspapers: the "Hamburger Nachrichten", "Hamburgische Correspondent", "Hamburger Fremdenblatt", and "Reform". Analyzes antisemitic events, surveying the beginning of the antisemitic movement in Hamburg between 1884-90, the political influence of antisemites on public opinion between 1890-98, the attitude of the press towards the "Jewish question", the ritual murder trial in Xanten in 1892, criticism by the Hamburg media of Jewish Orthodoxy, and "Jewish bourgeois" stereotypes. Deals, also, with the activities of several political groups to counter antisemitism. After 1900 the organized antisemitic movement ebbed, but small "völkisch" and nationalistic organizations survived, which were underestimated by the press.
