- Summary
- The Milwaukee Parental Choice Program dataset was collected as part of annual evaluations of the Milwaukee Parental Choice [pilot] Program. The research program began in the fall of 1990 and continued to 1995. The program was designed to provide opportunities for poor students in Milwaukee Public Schools. In lieu of tuition, the State of Wisconsin paid the private schools what the Milwaukee Public Schools would have received in state aid for each student. The program is the first in the United States to provide major subsidies to private schools as part of a general voucher program. For information about the current Milwaukee Parental School Choice Program, please see the web page at the State of Wisconsin, Department of Public Instruction. The principal investigator of the study was John Witte. The data are complex, arranged in an array of files which must be linked by researchers. They come from multiple sources, collected at different times of year, and they cover multiple years. The data are arranged in three groups: 1) Descriptive Data that include a Student Record Database (SRDB), Choice School Master Status File, School Descriptives , and internal utilities. 2) Survey Data. There are basically four types of surveys: Wave 1, Wave 2, MPS Control Group Surveys and Attrition. and 3: Test Data including test taken prior to transfer, following transfer, and tests of the control groups.
