- Summary
- In these days many priests feel the need to question the nature of the priesthood. Are their functions primarily liturgical, centred on the Mass, or pastoral, consisting of visiting, teaching, counselling? The author investigates the origins of the Christian priesthood and reaches the conclusion that the priest is above all a preacher. This role, in fact, includes all others; for example, to offer the Mass is to 'proclaim the Lord's death' (1Cor. 11:26), and to forgive sins to receive the sinner back into the community of those who hear and accept God's word. Another fact emerges in the course of the book: the flexibility of the structure of the Early Church. For example, in some places 'prophets' presided at the Eucharist. Again, it was not until the second century that the rule of one bishop to a see became normal. Schemas for reunion between Churches must not be frustrated through the misconception that the present hierarchical pattern in the Catholic Church is the only one possible.
