- The manuscripts consist of the "Book of musters, 1588"; a collection of letters from James, duke of York, to William, prince of Orange, 1678-1679; and miscellaneous letters and papers, 1636-1789. The Book of musters, edited by R.E.G. Kirk, "begins in the year 1557, and ends in the year 1599, but there are large gaps ... Besides the numerous schedules relating to musters and shipping, there are still more numerous copies of most important royal commissions and warrants, and letters of the Privy Council, addressed to lords lieutenants and others, including the Earl of Leicester, lieutenant general in 1588, Lord Hunsdon, Lor Howard of Effingham, and Sir Francis Drake ... The transcripts contained in this volume were obviously derived from papers formerly existing in the Privy Council office". cf. p. 1-2.
