Summary

A history of the Jews of Algeria under the Vichy government which was in power there from July 1940 until November 1943. Algerian Jews, French subjects since 1870 and numbering about 110,000 at the beginning of the war, were spared the fate of European Jewry but were subjected to the Vichy anti-Jewish legislation. They were stripped of their French nationality, deprived of their rights, and robbed of their property. The anti-Jewish laws remained in effect a year after the Allies landed in Algeria in November 1942, proving false the claims by France that it had adopted the racist policy under German pressure. Discusses the effects of the humiliations suffered by the Jews during the war on their political stance in the Algerian war of independence in 1960, when most of them sided against extremist defenders of French Algeria.
