Summary
In 1953, Ebony magazine editor Era Bell Thompson visited 18 African countries, only one of which was an independent nation: "My African safari was prompted by the same desire that prompts other Americans to return to Europe and Asia to visit their 'Old Country,' or that of their parents or grandparents. I, too, wanted to return to the land of my forefathers, to see if it is as dark and hopeless as it has been painted and to find out how it would receive a prodigal daughter who had not been home for three hundred years. And I wanted to know what my own reactions would be to my African ancestors." The countries as then known, from her Introduction: Gold Coast, Nigeria, Belgian Congo, Ruanda-Urundi, the British Rhodesias, Union of South Africa, Mozambique, Tanganyika, Kenya Colony, Uganda, Ethiopia (independent), Eritrea, Egypt.
