Summary
"A general work on the natural history of islands in the Pacific. The Hawaii text (pp. 289-332) contains short descriptions of Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii island. The author describes Hilo, the slopes of Mauna Loa, and Kilauea volcano on the latter island. There is also a description of Honolulu. Hartwig is not known to have visited Hawaii. Much of the text appears to have been adapted from other published sources, particularly those of the United States Exploring Expedition (Wilkes)." A plate and the Hawaii portion of a map are also copied from Wilkes. "A Danish edition was published in 1868....An English-language edition, under the title The Tropical World, was published in London in 1873...An English translation [of the Danish edition] (in typescript) of the Hawaiian text is in the Bishop Museum (Carter 11-F-2"--Forbes, David W.
