Summary

A "counter-inquiry" into the Papon trial of 1997-98, which Beaufort views as a judicial error which tarnished France's image as a constitutional state. Based on documentary evidence by SS officials of the Nazi occupation, the head of the British resistance network in Bordeaux, the Chief Rabbi of Bordeaux, Joseph Cohen, and others, contends that Papon was innocent of collaboration and of aiding in the deportation of ca. 1,600 Jews between 1942-44 while serving as the secretary general of the prefecture of Bordeaux. Examines the circumstances surrounding the deportations, Nazi pressure on the prefecture, and Papon's role in the prefecture's organization chart. Pp. 217-316 contain an interview with the historian Michel Bergès, who argues that Papon secretly joined forces with the Chief Rabbi and helped save the lives of 400 Jews by sabotaging deportations. Pp. 185-216 contain Beaufort's interview with Papon.
