Summary
Documents the rise of the Nazi student union, the Nationalsozialistischer Deutscher Studentenbund, and its activities from 1933-44, based on archival sources at Hamburg University and taking that university as an example. Argues that the union failed in its main tasks: the nazification of scholarship and the control and indoctrination of the student body. Describes antisemitism among students at Hamburg University from its foundation in 1919 through the Nazi period. Mentions the suspension of Jewish professors, the bookburning, and the exclusion of "Jewish theories" after 1933.
