- Abstract: This is a collection of papers intended to communicate the essentials of orthomolecular medicine to persons unfamiliar with that discipline. Orthomolecular medicine is the pursuit of good health and the treatment of disease by providing the patient with the optimum concentration of substances normally pesent in the body. This publication grew out of a symposium presented in May 1983 by the Orthomolecular Medical Society to honor Linus Pauling, a Nobel laureate. Coverage includes: 1) Biochemistry of disease, i.e., prediposition to disease, hemoglobin structure, aging, and free-radical reactions; 2) Nutrition and health, i.e., vitamin C, immunology, cancer, and orthomolecular psychiatry; and 3) The scientist as citizen, i.e., personal views of Dr. Pauling's social and political activism, including a brief presentation by Pauling on the future of orthomolecular medicine.
