Summary

Fictionalized memoirs of a Jew born in 1920 in Berlin. From 1938, Tichauer was forced to work in factories and in a coal mine. In February 1943 he was sent on a transport of 11,000 Jews from Berlin to Auschwitz. From there he was sent to the Jawiszowice labor camp, and later to the Weichsel-Union commando in Auschwitz. He participated in smuggling the explosives for the sabotage of the crematorium in Birkenau. With the evacuation of Auschwitz in January 1945, he was taken on a death march and ended up in the labor camp of Ampfing, in Bavaria, where he also engaged in smuggling explosives and where he was eventually liberated. After the war he lived in Chile, and later in Australia, where this memoir was written. In the 1960s, his scientific career (as a professor of biomechanics) brought him to the USA; he died in 1996. Pp. 7-17 and 207-211 contain the introduction and epilogue by Matthäus.
