Summary
"Shwe chi doe (pronounced schway-jee-doe) wall hangings have been made in the Mandalay area of Myanmar for more than 800 years. They are renowned for their beauty and quality of craftsmanship and have recently been 'discovered' by art collectors and tourists from around the world. Yet little is known about them. Old and New Tapestries of Mandalay provides the first comprehensive description of these wall hangings, beginning with a historical overview of what they are, where they came from, and how they were used by Bamar royalty. The author describes the wide range of uses of schwe chi doe from ceremonial head-dresses to coffin covers and tapestries. The most common stories and motifs used in schwe chi doe are also described and richly illustrated with colourful photographs." "The reader will be fascinated by the description of the production process, all of which is done by hand, including the making of special thread, sequins, and glass jewels. The tapestries of Mandalay, both old and new, are products of centuries of tradition. New artists, while remaining true to that tradition, have begun to develop new designs, themes, and motifs that promise to spark even more interest in this special textile art for years to come."--Jacket.
