Summary
While Charles Dickens has become a household name in America, familiar even to those who have never read his books, it is important to remember that he wrote primarily for an English audience. As a result, Dickens scholarship has been dominated by English scholars, who have largely left his relationship with America and Americans unexplored. Sidney and Carolyn Moss have stepped in to fill the resulting gap with "Charles Dickens and His Chicago Relatives," "The Charles DickensùThomas Powell Vendetta", and "American Episodes Involving Charles Dickens," their new book of essays that focuses on Dickens' two visits to America. The Mosses explore Dickens' effect on the American literary scene, and the effect that American culture had on him, and bring to light entertaining but forgotten stories about his trips.
