- Summary
- Analyzes reports on immigration policy (1938-47) and foreign trade policy, based on the coverage of leading daily newspapers in the three language regions of Switzerland. The topic of refugees was rarely discussed as a problem; all political circles considered Switzerland a "transit country", spurred by fears that the nature of the country might be changed by the presence of too many strangers. People who were allowed to enter the country were mostly those whose return to their homes was certain, such as refugee children or children on vacation. The fact that most of the refugees were Jews was explicitly mentioned only in French-speaking Switzerland and not in German-speaking areas. Equally rare, at least until 1942, was a substantial linking of the coverage of refugees with the continuous coverage on their persecution by the Nazi regime; articles about refugees largely omitted the reasons for their flight. Pp. 437-496, by Georg Kreis, discuss censorship concerning immigration policy and foreign trade policy.
