Summary
"Medicine in Society provides an introduction to the group of subjects collectively known as the behavioural sciences, those sciences that concentrate on the context within which illness and disease arise, and the interactions between patient and health professionals take place. In general terms, they are concerned with the relationships between individuals, and the groups and societies within which they function. The include perspectives drawn from ethics, sociology, psychology, epidemiology, health economics and public administration. Medicine in Society offers medical students a framework for understanding all these behavioural sciences. It describes the theoretical bases of these subjects, explains the concepts of key importance to medical students, and links these concepts to clinical situations and experiences which they are likely to come across during their training." "The volume will be of principal interest to medicine undergraduates but will also be relevant to undergraduates in dentistry and nursing and allied health professions. Overall the text is of generic relevance in modern undergraduate medical courses which have an ongoing interest in behavioural perspectives."--Jacket.
