- Summary
- Guillén is the national poet of Cuba and president of the country's National Union of Writers and Artists. His quest for a new Black Cuban identity was echoed by the writings of Black Americans and the negritude movement in France. By using Yoruba rhythms and words, his work combines the African tradition with that of his Cuban heritage.
