Summary
  • "The Emergence of Mass Politics in Spain: Populist Demagoguery and Republican Culture, 1890-1910 is an account of the transformation of Spanish political life around 1900 seen through the figure of Alejandro Lerroux (described by Raymond Carr as the "greatest mob politician" of the turn of the century). It examines populism not so much as a mass movement of discontent, but as a strategic - mostly peaceful but sometimes violent - means of achieving specific political goals, namely the opening up of a liberal-oligarchical regime to a more participatory and representative form of politics.
  • Exploring the beginnings of mass politics in Spain through the events and circumstances of populism, anticlericalism, charismatic leadership, and the use of a new type of political rhetoric, the author uses semiotic, linguistic and psychological approaches in order to reconstruct the period and its players."--Jacket.
