Summary
Points to the aggressive campaign for conversion of the Jews, to which many succumbed, as the background to the Spanish Jewish philosopher Albo's "Sefer ha-Ikkarim" ("Book of Principles"). Chronicles the more significant of the 68 sessions of the disputation of Tortosa (1413-14), which centered on proofs from the Old Testament and Talmud that the Messiah had already come (in the person of Christ). Albo, who often differed from the other Jewish representatives in the disputation, asserted that the question of the Messiah was not essential to Judaism. Analyzes the "Ikkarim". The work, written eleven years later, does not recapitulate the contents of the disputation; however, its purpose was to strengthen Jews in the principles of their faith against the missionaries, and one method was to reduce some of the main points of contention to secondary importance. Shows the use of Albo's philosophy by early modern Christian theologians, either as a foil against other Jewish philosophers or as a support for anti-Trinitarians.
