Summary
Discusses the persecution and exploitation of German Jewry during World War II; pp. 49-214 focus on Aryanization in Witten. Deals with the boycott of Jewish enterprises, the returns of which were reduced by 50%. Mentions the fact that some clients continued to buy in Jewish stores, but did not pay. Although general persecution affected Jewish businesses, the boycott was the main reason for their closure. Germans who were involved in Aryanization were mostly middle-class, and in many cases managed to move up from the position of a simple worker to an owner. Aryanization was not practiced only by loyal Nazis, but was common among the entire population. Although most Germans who took possession of Jewish property knew the Jewish owners personally, they acted indifferently or maliciously, taking advantage of the situation. The involvement of the entire population points to acceptance, if not consent. Beyond that, unscrupulous acquisitions of household effects of deported Jews prove the conviction of the purchasers concerning the non-return of the deportees.
