Summary
Biotechnology is one of the fastest-growing areas of scientific, technical and industrial innovation; it is also one of the most widely publicised new technologies. Innovations as varied as the development of genetic testing and therapies, genetically modified food crops, animal and stem-cell cloning have given rise to increasingly prominent public debates. While the biotechnology industry initially assumed that regulatory processes were the sole hurdle, it is now apparent that a second hurdle, national and international public opinion, must be reckoned with.
