Summary
An expanded version of a paper presented on the 10th anniversary of the Society for Romanian Studies in Kansas City, October 1983. Discusses the ideology of the Legionary Movement and its antisemitism from the perspective of Orthodox Christian theology. States that mystical and Christian elements in Codreanu's writings were transmuted into something radically different, and that his mystical nationalism was a perversion of Christian Orthodoxy. Argues that Codreanu's antisemitism lacked any Christian arguments, and was merely a xenophobic component of his nationalism. Integrates Codreanu's and the Legion's ideology into a "civil religion", based on Romanianism (as an extreme form of nationalism), antisemitism being its most significant negative expression.
