Summary
Discusses the stance toward Jews of the most outstanding Spanish intellectuals during the 19th to mid-20th centuries. States that they oscillated between two positions: 1) differing degrees of antisemitism based on traditional clichés, such as the accusation of deicide, of usury and of conspiracy, among others, and 2) differing degrees of philosemitism in the form of philo-Sephardism, which was often based on the exaltation of Hispanicity and on hostility toward Ashkenazic Judaism and culture. Adds, also, that for most of those intellectuals it was easier to accept the Moorish heritage in Spanish culture than the Jewish.
