Summary

Discusses confiscation of Jewish property in Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Lands before and during World War II. Confiscations were carried out in Hungary by Horthy between 1938-44, and in Slovakia and the Protectorate by the Nazis from 1939 on. Gives a detailed account of the Jewish communities in these areas before the war, and analyzes the anti-Jewish legislation, which led to the confiscations and the marginalization of the Jews. Describes attempts at restitution before the establishment of communism and confiscations during the first years of the new regime. Later, anti-Zionism contributed to discouraging the Jews from demanding compensation. Since the fall of communism, restitution and compensation processes have begun in all three countries, with great individual differences. Emphasizes that the Jews also demand that these states acknowledge their responsibility for the fate of the Jews in the Holocaust.
