Summary

Traces the fate of Jewish lawyers in Hamburg who suffered from discrimination and persecution under the Nazis. In 1933 there were 215 Jewish lawyers in Hamburg, more than 33% of the total number. In 1933, new Jewish lawyers were barred from practicing their profession. Between 1933-38, 36 lawyers emigrated and 17 died. After 1938, Jews were completely excluded from the profession due to the fifth regulation of Nazi civil law, which forbade Jews to practice law. Nevertheless, 22 Jewish advocates continued to practice. During the war, 36 lawyers died a natural death, four committed suicide, 24 were murdered in concentration camps, 117 emigrated, and 34 survived in Germany. Pp. 114-168 contain a list of the lawyers, including brief biographies.
