Summary
Rachel Winnapee, a poverty-stricken, sixteen-year-old Native American orphan goes to work at the March family summer home at Lake Michigan in post-World War II summer of 1945. She strives to remain the silent obedient servant until she is assigned the take of caring for the family's tragically scarred and emotionally shattered young son, Woody. Woody is haunted by his battlefield experiences where his wounds were inflicted. Rachel begins to see the young man as a tortured prince and falls in love with him.
