Summary
The first generation of knowledge-based teaching programs automated instruction in an easily understood manner, and improved upon traditional computer-aided instruction. Knowledge-based tutoring, which allows one program to teach multiple problems in multiple domains is the focus of this text. It describes an architecture for implementing such a program, named GUIDON (pronounced "GUIDE-on"), is a first attempt to adapt a pre-existing expert system for use in teaching. This book describes what GUIDON does, how it is constructed, and the benefits and limitations of its design.
