Summary
Collection of essays focusing on the history of the world-famous German Jewish Rosenthal family and their role in the book trade and antiquary in München between 1867-1945. Pp. 179-201, by Elisabeth Angelmair, discuss the Nazi period. Discrimination and the persecution of Jews gradually led to the liquidation of the Rosenthal enterprise. In August 1935 the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste in Berlin banned the Rosenthals from the profession, calling for closure within four weeks. Erwin Rosenthal appealed for a delay in order to prevent an immediate price decline for the existing stock of ca. 500,000 volumes and the dismissal of six employees. At the same time he began to prepare for the sale which was concluded on 28 December 1935, saving at least a part of the capital. He immigrated to Italy, then to Switzerland, and in 1941 to the USA. A branch run by Ludwig Rosenthal was Aryanized; two sons and a daughter immigrated in 1937 to the Netherlands and opened a book trade there. The sons went into hiding in 1940. Fritz Rosenthal, his wife, and her mother survived; Paul Rosenthal and his fiancee were betrayed and deported to Auschwitz. In Germany, during the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, Norbert and Ernst Rosenthal were sent briefly to Dachau; Ernst and his wife immigrated to England in May 1939, while Norbert and his family had to move to a Jewish encampment in 1942 and in July were deported to Theresienstadt.
