- Summary
- Anti-Jewish hostility among French and other European colonists in Oran was endemic but was amplified in 1895 when a violent antisemitic press campaign was enthusiastically endorsed by the local population. Oranese politicians, resenting the block Jewish vote controlled by consistorial president Simon Kanouï, exploited that trend to obtain the mayoralty and a deputation to the French Parliament in 1896, exposing the Jews to harassment which culminated in the antisemitic riots of May 1897. Although the antisemitic movement lost political power after 1898, anti-Jewish persecutions continued to be a part of daily life. Analyzes attitudes of the authorities, the Catholic Church, Spanish colonists, and the Arab population towards the Jews, as well as antisemitic caricatures and sketches.
