- Summary
- This recent study reviews the performance of 99 World Bank development operations to see how they have improved the living conditions of the urban poor. The study reviews the evolution of the World Bank's urban portfolio since 1972 but concentrates on projects completed since 1993. It finds that projects that have most improved conditions implement the World Bank's stated strategies and goals for livability, good governance, bankability, and competitiveness. To improve progress toward these goals by the projects under review, the report recommends systematic reporting of results, revision of the Urban Strategy Paper Cities in Transition in its strategy toward successful implementation of competitiveness, and clarification of the concept and operational consequences of competitiveness, so those in charge can more effectively meet those goals.
