Summary
Presents a biography and the correspondence of Josef Gelbart, a Polish Jew who was born in 1914 in Altona and grew up in Hamburg. In 1938 he and his mother were sent back to Poland and interned in a camp in Zbąszyń for several weeks. They moved to Ottwick and then to Warsaw, where they were interned in the ghetto from November 1940. Pp. 18-36 include letters written by Gelbart to his former boss, Hans Stockmar, the owner of a candle factory in Hamburg where Gelbart had worked. The letters were written between May 1941-May 1942, in an encoded style because of censorship. They do not mention Nazi perpetrators or Jewish victims directly. They mention forced labor casually and insinuate events. Nevertheless, between the lines, the certitude of inescapable annihilation increases from letter to letter. Gelbart also thanks Stockmar for sending food and clothes. The last postcard, dated 20 May 1942, includes an allusion to the threat of deportation. Gelbart's further fate is unkwown. Stockmar was recognized as a Rightous Gentile by Yad Vashem.
